Financial Planning
by Naina

Introducing Naina

Naina turned a lot of heads when she compered our evening with Rory Stewart at the RDS. Naina has established herself as a key member of the Santiago team where she makes an important contribution to the success of clients’ portfolios and the company. At Santiago we want our clients to do well and our people to flourish. Naina (like many of her colleagues) epitomises this philosophy.

Perhaps prompted by the admiration and positive feedback we received about Naina after our event, it felt like a good idea to highlight the important work Naina does writing financial plans for clients, what that entails and what the benefits are. The Editor.

What prompted you to specialise in financial planning?

It is an aspect of my work that I enjoy and find particularly satisfying; I feel I can make a significant impact on a clients’ sense of well-being and can give valuable advice.

By its very nature, advising anyone on financial planning requires meaningful dialogue to get a full picture of their affairs, understand their worries and establish their objectives. Such matters are invariably confidential and building trust in relationships is fulfilling and important to both me and to clients.

While clients share many common concerns, each plan is different, and the field is ever evolving. Changes to tax, regulations, pensions and investments keep me on my toes and allow for professional growth. The variety of demands I encounter every day, whether it’s creating personalised financial strategies or solving intricate problems, are a challenge that I enjoy.

Presenting a completed financial plan to clients, experiencing their positive reactions, and answering their questions, not only makes my work enjoyable but also gives me a sense of accomplishment and purpose.

Do you think clients benefit from it?

Undoubtedly, in many ways. I’d highlight three

1. The exercise of thinking about what is important and articulating your objectives gives a sense of purpose and greatly enhances the probability of objectives being achieved.

2. Taking stock of your financial affairs and setting them out in an intuitive way reveals matters that might need attending to and creates a ready reference. Having everything organised naturally improves the sense of control and well-being.

3. Informed choices make for better financial decisions. That is key.

Who is the service aimed at?

While anyone can benefit from a financial plan, I specialise in individuals who are beyond the midpoint of their adult lives; those that have made inroads into establishing income stream, savings and pensions. To use an aviation metaphor, they are starting to think about their landing approach. Between now and landing they may want to get various aspects of their financial affairs tidied up such as: debts paid off, children education and retirement provisions made. The plan may extend to exiting businesses or professions, providing pension and investment advice, and also suitable insurance. It is through highlighting and assisting clients in navigating all these issues where I can really make a difference.

Our 5 step Financial Planning Process

Getting to Know You
We take time to get to know you. The first meeting is free and looks at potential opportunities. This usually starts with a “discovery chat,” where Santiago sits down with clients.
We discover your goals and objectives. The next step is deciding what you want to achieve with your money—whether that’s buying a home, saving for retirement, or building an emergency fund. Set Your Goals We’ll sit down with you to go over it all, which helps us create a realistic plan tailored to you.
Creating a Plan
Once you have agreed on the plan we have prepared, each recommendation and structure will be put in place. This is when your financial plan comes alive.

Frequently Asked Questions

That’s easy. Just talk to me. I’ll be delighted to hear from you. Ideally arrange to meet for an informal discussion. That is the starting point.

Generally, no, if we are providing the service to a valued client of the firm or someone who is becoming a client we see it as part of the service. A proper understanding of a client’s affairs, risk appetite and objectives is instrumental in managing their portfolios. We see the financial plan as a useful exercise, both for the client and the advisor.
